The United States is huge. Spending a weekend in New York gives the impression of being in a completely different country from spending a week in Utah’s red rock area. This vastness is what makes the country attractive as well as what makes it difficult. So, where should one start?
It all depends on your objectives. Nevertheless, some locations keep appearing on the shortlists for a reason—they always deliver whatever you are looking for, whether that be the atmosphere of a city, the open desert, or something in between. The following eleven stand out.
1. New York, New York City
New York does not welcome you in; it throws you right into the heart of the city. Places like the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Broadway are the main attractions, but do not forget the High Line or the peaceful view from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
Why not, at times, skip the subway map and walk? Between the various landmarks, the city shows itself—its good points, its harsh aspects, and its memorable moments. Begin early, since the crowds in Midtown in the afternoon are far from trivial.
2. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
You can never fully convey it through photographs, since they fail to capture the silence and the way the light shifts over the cliffs from sunrise to dusk. The South Rim is the standard entrance area, with Mather Point and Bavaria Point being the ones that have gained in popularity.
Don’t just take the photograph and go. Stay for a little while and observe the shadows moving. It alters the way you perceive scale.
3. Yellowstone National Park is located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.
Yellowstone is a geothermal area unlike any other in the United States, and while Old Faithful attracts the most attention, the colored hot springs—particularly Grand Prismatic—tend to remain with you longer.
If you have the opportunity, then stay within the park; wildlife viewing at dawn in places such as Lamar Valley is worth the increased cost of accommodation. Please note that many roads close in winter, so make sure to check access before making your booking.
4. Yosemite National Park in California
The granite walls attract climbers, and it is even evident when you are in the valley looking up at El Capitan. Tunnel View gives you the usual postcard view, while Glacier Point provides the wider view.
The number of people present in the summer can be quite large. In late spring, things are generally better since the waterfalls are powerful, and although the traffic is heavy, it is still manageable.
5. San Francisco, California.
The fog is included as part of the experience. In San Francisco you can go through various food cultures within one afternoon; although the Golden Gate is the well-known landmark, it is the narrow backstreets and the old cable cars that give the city its true character.
September and October tend to have clearer and warmer weather than that of the summer months, so it is still a good idea to take a jacket with you.
6. New Orleans, Louisiana
There is not any other place in the country that has this same atmosphere. With its jazz, magnets, and wrought-iron balconies, it appeals to all the senses. Although the French Quarter attracts the largest number of visitors, Frenchmen Street is where you will typically find better live music.
If you are there for Mardi Gras or the Jazz Fest, you should book your accommodation well in advance since demand increases greatly.
7. Charleston, South Carolina.
Charleston is a slower place to visit; it has a refined character and is rich in history. The photographs taken of Rainbow Row come out well, and, on their own, the food of the Low Country—particularly the shrimp and grits—makes the journey worthwhile.
The history goes beyond the surface appeal. It is better to select tours that provide a more complete account than those that offer only the refined one. Folly Beach is a good place in which to relax afterward.
8. Zion National Park, Utah
The area is characterized by narrow canyons and steep drops. Angels Landing puts both nerves and balance to the test. The Narrows is yet a different kind of hike—a trail that follows the river through a slot canyon.
You need a permit for some routes, and it is enforced. Check the system early since the limits are there for a reason.
9. Washington, D.C.
Free museums are among the best value offerings in the country; the Smithsonian institutions alone would take up several days. You could go from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol, see the monuments, and not have to pay for entrance.
It seldom succeeds if you attempt to visit all the museums in a single day, so select one or two and arrange separate times for the Arlington National Cemetery and Georgetown.
10.Florida’s Miami and the Florida Keys
Miami offers heat, color, and energy; South Beach is the place to be, and the street art in Lynwood is worth seeing. If you have the time, you can drive the Overseas Highway south to Key West.
The keys change the atmosphere—making it slower, saltier, and a little eccentric. Refer to the hurricane season calendar from June to November.
11. Sedna, Arizona
The red rock features are the main characteristic of the area, and the main attraction for many people is hiking Cathedral Rock or Devil’s Bridge, although others are content just to drive through the landscape.
The heat in the summer is very strong, so spring or autumn is the more comfortable time of year unless you specifically want to face the challenge of morning heat.
You cannot manage to see all of them in a single visit; select a region—such as the East Coast if you are interested in cities and history, the West if you want to visit parks and open spaces, and the South if your tastes lie with music and food—and spend two or three places enough time. The country is not moving on. It is by rushing over the details that the best parts are usually overlooked.
